There was a time when I believed the only path to success was to work myself into the ground. After finishing my A Levels in 2020, I had a choice: university or diving straight into the working world. Up until my A Levels, I never really applied myself. But in that final stretch, something clicked. I proved to myself that with hard work, I could achieve more than I ever thought possible. That realisation was exhilarating. It gave me confidence, a sense of direction, and the drive to skip university, diving straight into the deep end.

At 18, I became the youngest person working at a Fortune 500 company, swapping classwork and fart jokes for high-stake corporate meetings. It was a leap that promised growth far beyond what I’d imagined, but I wasn’t ready for the reality of it. Within months, I found myself in a sleek office in Hammersmith, overwhelmed and teary-eyed. My friends’ Snapchat stories showed them enjoying nights out at university while I was frantically preparing a presentation for the CEO. I felt like I was drowning. I was determined to prove myself, but the pressure felt suffocating.

That moment changed me. It turned me into that guy - you know, the one who listens to motivational speeches at the gym (just me?). I devoured self-help books, watched every hustle video under the sun, and convinced myself I could grind my way to success. But the harder I pushed, the more I found that ambition, without balance, can backfire.

The Cost of Ambition

For a while, I thought sheer determination would carry me forward. I worked long hours, skipping rest and sacrificing downtime because I believed that’s what success demanded. At first, it felt like I was making progress. I was constantly busy, always ticking things off the list.

But then the cracks appeared. I was exhausted, unable to properly switch off because my mind was constantly running through unfinished tasks. Workouts felt like a slog, my sleep was broken, and my creativity, something I take a lot of pride in, began to fade. I wasn’t building momentum; I was burning out.

The turning point came when I realised I wasn’t actually achieving anything meaningful. I was just working endlessly, without direction or purpose. My ambition, instead of driving me forward, was draining me dry.

The Shift: Finding Balance

It wasn’t a single 'eureka' moment that changed things, but a series of small realisations. I started noticing patterns. A good workout in the morning gave me more energy throughout the day. A weekend spent away from my hometown left me sharper and more motivated. Slowly, I came to understand that wellbeing wasn’t something to fit around my work - it had to be part of the work.

I started experimenting. Could I maintain, or even improve, my productivity by prioritising rest and my health? To my surprise, the answer was yes. The more I invested in my wellbeing, the more focused, creative, and energised I became.

Key Practices for Balancing Productivity and Wellbeing

Here are the practices that have transformed the way I work and live:

  1. Prioritising Movement: Exercise became non-negotiable. Whether it’s a gym session, a run, or even a slow walk, moving my body clears my mind and recharges me. Strangely, it’s often when I’m not working that I get my best ideas - stepping away from the screen always sparks something.

  2. Setting Boundaries: I learnt the power of saying no (to my brain too). If something doesn’t align with my goals or values, I let it go. That includes work boundaries - when I’m spending time with friends, I’m fully present with them. It’s simple, protect your time, and you’ll protect your energy.

  3. Scheduling Rest: I treat rest like any other task. Whether it’s taking a 10-minute breather or planning a full day off, these pauses are what keep me grounded and motivated. It’s incredible how much sharper you feel when you actually allow yourself to recover.

Lessons Learned and Advice for Others

The biggest lesson I’ve learnt? Productivity and wellbeing are inseparable. You can’t perform at your best if you’re running on empty. Rest, exercise, and boundaries aren’t luxuries - they’re the foundation of sustainable ambition.

If you feel stuck in a cycle of constant hustle, take a step back. Are you working effectively, or are you just working endlessly? Start with something small - a daily walk, turning off notifications after work, or going to bed at a consistent time. It’s these small habits that add up to big changes.

Conclusion

Balancing productivity and wellbeing is no easy task, especially when you’re driven and striving for more. I’ve learnt that taking care of yourself isn’t weakness - it’s your greatest strength.

I’m still on this journey, and I am far from achieving everything I’ve set out to do. But I now have something I didn’t before... A formula for sustainable growth.

Because what's the point if you're working miserably?
